Girl Has Panic Attack On Plane. Mom Looks Over & Realizes Steward Is Handing Her ‘Special Drinks’
When Erika Jeorgean Swart boarded a plane with her three children, she was totally unprepared by her 9-year-old daughter’s reaction after they took off into the air. Gabby started to become very anxious about the trip from Orlando to Newark, which confused mom. She had flown before as a little girl, so Erika was quite surprised when her daughter suddenly developed a fear of flying!
Gabby was having a difficult time throughout the flight and mom could see the fear and panic in her eyes. Gabby, who is a Type-1 diabetic, was trying her best to remain calm, but it clearly wasn’t working. Unfortunately, it was starting to make her blood sugar levels crash!
Erika didn’t think her daughter was disturbing the other passengers, but then a flight attendant appeared out of nowhere and handed Gabby a “special drink” to keep her quiet. However, keeping quiet was not Erika’s thing, and the outspoken mom immediately turned to social media after witnessing the man’s actions towards her daughter.
Erika’s husband wasn’t with her on this trip, and she had her hands full trying to make sure all three of her children behaved themselves. But then a flight attendant named Garrick took it upon himself to intervene. Mom wrote a lengthy post on Southwest Airline’s Facebook page to let them know what one of their employees was up to:
“This is Garrick, an employee of yours working flight 1264 flying from Orlando to Newark…”
Erika snapped a picture of the man in question, so the bigwigs at Southwest would have no problem identifying him. However, instead of outing him for being a bad employee, Erika praised him for his super sweet actions!
“Throughout the flight he tried making her laugh and bringing her special drinks. As we were getting closer weather was rough and there was a bit of turbulence. Gabby began having a complete panic attack on descent.”
Garrick could tell that Gabby was struggling to stay brave and composed, so he paid extra special attention to her. He even asked if it was okay if he could sit in the empty seat next to her!
“During extremely rough turbulence she began crying and grabbed his arm, he gently told her she could hang on as long as she needed to. Just after this due to the extreme stress she was under her blood sugars began dangerously crashing. He got up from his seat to get her an orange juice and came right back to sit with her. She asked again if she could continue to hold his arm while the plane was landing.”
When the plane started its descent, Garrick distracted Gabby by suggesting they talk about something fun. For the next 30 minutes the caring father, who has a daughter around Gabby’s age, talked with the girl about pets and what grade she was in.
He knew exactly what he was doing, and by the time the plane landed, Gabby was calmer than a sleeping baby!
“Once on the ground while taxiing to the gate he came on the intercom and announced that his friend, Gabby, in the front row overcame her fears of flying and asked for a round of applause. The whole plane clapped for her. It was a wonderful experience on Southwest. We are forever grateful to have met such a beautiful, selfless soul.”
William from Southwest responded by saying that flight travel can be a scary situation for many, but their flight crews really do care about everyone’s experience.
“It warms our Heart to see such kindness and carrying from one of our amazing Flight Attendants, and we can’t even tell you how proud we are of your daughter for getting through the flight.”
As for Garrick, he will be getting the recognition he deserves for his kindness.
